Admissions looks at you as an individual. We consider all aspects of you - your life experiences, aspirations, work ethic, engagement and academic record. As a test-optional university, you are not required to submit your ACT or SAT test scores.

Short Answer Questions on the Application

Answering the short essay questions on your application can seem like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Get a jump start on your answers!

The purpose of the short answer questions is for us to learn about your character and drive for being successful in an academic setting. While we do want well thought out answers, we only require 75-250 words, so don't feel like you need to write a novel.  These short answer questions allow you to create a unique picture about yourself.

We're looking for answers that...

  • Go beyond simply describing your experiences and activities. We want answers that are reflective and open our eyes to something more about your experiences. 
  • Let your personality shine in a way that your academic records don’t. 
  • Distinguish you from other applicants whose academic records are quite similar.
  • Explain circumstances, if any, that affected your academic record.
  • Are clear, focused, organized and follow a logical structure.
  • Pay attention to the rules of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

    The Admission Process for International Students (two-step process)

    STEP 1: BECOME ACADEMICALLY ADMITTED BY SUBMITTING THE FOLLOWING:

    First-Year Applicants:

        1. Your application
        2. Answers to the 6 short essay questions that are included on the application
        3. $35 application fee or a fee waiver
        4. Official high school transcript (9th-12th grade) courses and grades. If you complete secondary school in a country where a secondary leaving examination is required for university entry, you must also provide results of this examination.
        5. English Proficiency (if applicable)
        6. 1 letter of recommendation

    Transfer Applicants:

        1. Your application
        2. Answers to the 5 short essay questions that are included on the application
        3. $35 application fee or a fee waiver
        4. Official college transcript. If the college credit you took is from a non U.S. school, it must be evaluated by a NACES member organization (i.e. WES or ECE). High school transcript is not required if you have 12 or more completed college semester credits.

    STEP 2: BECOME OFFICIALLY ADMITTED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AN I-20 BY SUBMITTING THE FOLLOWING:
    1. Copy of your passport
    2. International Student Agreement form
    3. Certification of Finances form
    4. Declaration of Support form
    5. Supporting documents for Declaration of Support (i.e. bank statement or letter from bank stating available funds)
    6. For students currently enrolled at a school in the United States: If you are currently attending a school in the U.S., your SEVIS record will need to be released to UMN Crookston. In order to do so, you and your Designated School Official will need to fill out and submit the Transfer Recommendation/Release form.
