Application Questions
Answering the short essay questions on your application can seem like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Get a jump start on your answers!
The purpose of the short answer questions is for us to learn about your character and drive for being successful in an academic setting. While we do want well thought out answers, we only require 75-250 words, so don't feel like you need to write a novel. These short answer questions allow you to create a unique picture about yourself.
Here's what we are asking...
First Year Questions: (choose one)
- Why do you want to attend UMN Crookston?
- Share something about your identity, talents, or interests that we would not learn from your application materials.
- Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? OR, Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
Transfer Student Questions:
- Why did you select your major/program and how will this help you meet your personal goals?
- Tell us about your professional (employment), academic achievements, and any volunteer work you have participated in that reflects your organization and leadership experiences.
- Optional: If your academic record does not accurately reflect your efforts and ability, please explain here. How would you plan to be academically successful at UMN Crookston?
Here's a few tips to help you write your answers to the short essay questions.
We're looking for answers that...
- Go beyond simply describing your experiences and activities. We want answers that are reflective and open our eyes to something more about your experiences.
- Let your personality shine in a way that your academic records don’t.
- Distinguish you from other applicants whose academic records are quite similar.
- Explain circumstances, if any, that affected your academic record.
- Are clear, focused, organized and follow a logical structure.
- Pay attention to the rules of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Official/Unofficial Transcripts
Official/Unofficial Transcripts
Official/Unofficial Transcripts
What is an official transcript?
- Official transcripts are certified and signed by the college registrar. They can be sent directly to our university at your request.
- We only accept official transcripts
- Electronic transcripts
- An electronic (secure, certified PDF) transcript is “official” in its electronic form as long as it is not altered. Electronic transcripts are only available through online requests via Parchment. Each time the file is opened, it will be certified electronically (internet connection required) to ensure it has not been altered. Electronic transcripts are available to download by the recipient for 30 days. After 30 days, the document will no longer be available. It is your responsibility to ensure that transcript is downloaded by the recipient within 30 days. A printed copy of an electronic PDF transcript is not official. While electronic transcripts are widely accepted, confirm with your recipients that they will accept this format before ordering.
- Paper transcripts
- A paper transcript is "official" only as long as it remains in its sealed white envelope. Do not open the sealed envelope if you are forwarding your transcript to another party (an institution, employer, or another person). Open the envelope only if you have ordered the transcript for personal use. Multiple paper transcripts (each in its own sealed white envelope) sent to a single address will be enclosed in a manila envelope that can be opened.
The University of Minnesota considers transcripts “official” only when the certified record of academic work is transmitted in a confidential manner from the issuing institution and includes proper signatures and authentication elements. The acceptance of official transcript(s) is at the discretion of the Registrar and may include sealed paper documents, a secure PDF utilizing a secure delivery service, secure transmission of electronic records from the issuing institution, etc., and should be a complete record of all coursework taken with final grades/marks. Faxed or photocopied academic records are not considered official.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
If I'm currently taking classes should I wait to send an official transcript?
- No. We need an official transcript in order to process your admission so waiting on sending the transcript will delay your admission decision. You can send an official transcript that has current classes on it. The classes listed will not have official letter grades but usually a Z or IP to mark the in-progress credit.
Do you need official or unofficial transcripts for admission?
- Transfer students are required to submit official transcripts to complete their admission application and for review.
Can I sent my transcripts electronically or should I mail them?
- We accept both electronic and mailed transcripts. Please see descriptions above for official transcripts from each format.
When can I use an unofficial transcript?
- Unofficial transcripts can be used for unofficial transfer credit evaluations. To learn more about a transfer credit evaluation before you even apply visit here.
The website at my school says that you can order transcripts for me as part of the Minnesota system, is that correct?
- It is not unusual for applicants to think that we can access MN State transcripts! UMN Crookston is not part of the Minnesota State system, so we do not have access to those transcripts. The transcripts would need to be requested and sent directly to our office. The transcripts can be sent either by email or postal mail.
My transfer credits for all my schools show up on one transcript. Do I really have to send in separate transcripts?
- In order to be considered for admission into an online program at UMN Crookston, we require an official transcript from all colleges and universities that you have previously attended or created an academic record for. These records are required regardless of the schools accreditation status or your GPA. These records are needed for auditing purposes as well as determining eligibility for financial aid.
